ReplyDeleteWOW! That is not how I would expect it to be! Estella was open enough and smiled at Pip all throughout the clip! Pip acted like a puppy in love. I choose Pip's POV.
First, he goes to Miss Havinsham because she "wished to see him." He kisses her hand, to which she comments that she feels like a queen. Then she gestures to Estella. Pip kisses her hand, as well, and exclaims surprise at seeing her at the Manor.
Miss. Havinsham tells them to go catch up in the garden. Pip keeps bringing up memories such as the fight with Herbert and the kiss she gave him. She tells him she doesn't remember the kiss or how she made him cry. They talk about her heart, or lack of. Estella insists she does not have one, but Pip is too caught up in her and keeps repeating that he doesn't believe her.
I like the clip because it showed some insight on future chapters, but that is not how I imagined the two to act!

ReplyDeleteIt was very strange to me how Estella openly admitted that she was cruel and had no sympathy or a "heart." She even warned Pip to remember how she was raised to hate men, almost like she was trying to lower his opinion of her.It seems that she learned a lot while she grew into a lady and she became less spiteful towards Pip and others.

It's so unlike her,a dn fo Pip to openly except this Estella, he must be drunk on her beautiful looks,or something. I wonder if she's found someone and is wanting to foil Miss Havisham's plans for her to break Pip's heart.

ReplyDeleteHmmmm, that was pretty much how I pictured Miss Havisham, but not Estella or Pip. Estella seemed kinder to me in the clip, and plainly stated how she had no heart to Pip. However, in the book, so far, only Miss Havisham has quietly told Estella to break his heart. Estella hasn't told Pip she would. Also, Pip seems quite the gentleman in the clip, with the clothes and the gelled hair. Perhaps Estella thinks he is too, or perhaps she still sees him as another heart to break.
Estella's Point-of-View:
Estella sees Pip for the first time since childhood, and tells him how she remembered hiding and watching him fight with Herbert. She openly confesses how she enjoyed watching the two, and when Pip tells her that his beating Herbert had a great reward (a kiss), she doesn't seem to remember. Also, when Pip asks if she remembers the time she made him cry, she simply says, "Did I?", showing that he never meant anything to her, and she does indeed have no heart. Estella blames her heartlessness on how she was raised. This is most definitely referring to how Miss Havisham has raised her to break hearts.

ReplyDeleteMiss Havisham pretty much was how I expected her to be (get it? haha). But I visualized Estella to have a proud smirk on her face all the time. But the clip showed a more kinder smiling open-faced "Why hello Pip" kind of person. Whoa. And Pip was not "pippy" at all. He was not the kind of meek kind of guy letting everyone do what they wanted with him.
From Estella's point of view, I think she just takes things on her just to hard. She doesn't seem to remember Pip crying at all, and she blames it on her heartlessness. Yet, I think Pip is right. Estella has a heart, she just doesn't know it or maybe won't believe it. I think she's just been raised to long to break people's hearts for her own heartlessness that she forgets that she had a heart in the first place, if that makes sense.

ReplyDeleteI was not expecting Estella to act as warm- hearted to Pip as she did in the clip. Her overall manner was not as coldly insensitive as in the book. Estella's wall of insesitivity was shown, however, when she told Pip that she "had no heart"; yet she still ends the scene by saying "you shall not shed tears for my cruelty today", which I did not expect her to say. The way that Miss Havisham was dressed and acted did not surprise me, and the way that her house looked was very similar to the way I have pictured it before. Pip seemed a little more confident in himself in the clip than I had expected.
I will write from Estella's point of view:
I think that Estella has a part of her that does not want Pip to be hurt by her. Though she has made him cry and hurt him in the past, I think that by telling him that she "has no heart, and perhaps that's why she has no memory" and that Pip must know that her heart has "no sympathy, no softness, no sentiment" is a way of forewarning him that he can be hurt by her in the future, which could be her way of preventing Pip from being hurt. I don't belive that Estella is completely cold-hearted; I think much of her insensitivity just comes from, as she says in the clip, how she has "been brought up". The clip may have made Estella act more warm-hearted towards Pip than she did in the book, but I think that it did show some truth, in my opinion, that Estella has a little bit more of a sensitive side towards Pip than she will openly show.

ReplyDeleteThis was not how I pictured it. It is, however, how I want it yo be. Estella was soft and warm with Pip, and I think that's how it should be. Pip has huge hopes and dreams of one day getting Estella, and this clip makes it look like those dreams are coming true. Estella says she doesn't have a heart, and she admits to her cruelty in the past. You can tell she feels bad for making Pip cry although she claims to not remember it.

Mhmmm .. well that wasn't how i had imagined it, at all. To me, Pip seemed way more confident than i had expected. And Estella, what happened to the mean vibe i got from her in the book? She seems so caring and sweet here. And for some reason, i imagined Pip and Estella to be much younger, as if they never grew up. And i think of Miss Havisham to act much older. All of the charecters seemed so sure of themselves, far off fro what i thought.
Here's Esella's point of veiw:
She sees Pip, now a man with a certain classy attitude about him. She doesn't remember that she ever made Pip cry. She says "You know Pip, I have no heart. Perhaps that's why i have no memory" as if she is almost trying to warn Pip what may come if he falls in love with her. Though he brushes it off and thinks she must have a heart. Estella knows as of now, she can't be expected to become anything more than a companion because of the way she was brought up. It hurts her so because it seems as if she wants to be with Pip but her heart won't let her. She is aware of how much she would hurt Miss Havisham if she begins to fall in love, and she can't do that to the one who brought her up by hand.

ReplyDeleteThe way that the movie was portrayed in this scene really surprised, mostly because of Estella's actions. At the beginning of the scene when Pip talked to Miss Havisham, I was not very surprised. Miss Havisham looked a mess in her wedding dress, and that's how I visioned her to be. It was strange to see Pip being so comfortable and gentleman like to her. You could see that side of him when he kissed Miss Havisham's hand.
On the other hand, Estella really wasn't what I thought her to be. From the first instant she saw Pip, she smiled at him in and showed a sort of innocence (the total opposite of what she is). Once they had introduced themselves once again, they headed into the garden. There, Estella talked about how she enjoyed watching Pip fight Herbert when they were younger. Pip went on to say that he was now great friends with Herbert. Then, Estella said that "since you have had a change of fortune, you naturally have changed your companion". This really showed me that Estella was only acting this way because she admires that Pip has become a gentleman. It shows that she is selfish and that she can't see the real substance in a person. When they continued to talk, Estella said that she doesn't have a heart, that she knows that she used to be cruel, and that she feels sorry for making Pip cry in the past even though she doesn't remember doing so.

Explanation of picture:
The ladder shows Pip’s whole life. How he started at the bottom, how Estella is his goal, and how he (should) climb his way to get there. Instead of working hard, he takes one big step and becomes a gentleman by luck.
Ok, so the top of the ladder is Estella. Pip was at the bottom, but now he’s just one step away from Estella, but that is a big step. He still doesn’t know if Estella will like him….so it’s a BIG (and suspenseful) rung.
I thought a ladder shows this picture really well because a ladder connects to the ground, which is common and normal, like Pip. And Estella is at the skies, like the saying “reach for the skies!” Pip is trying to do just that. (:

ReplyDeleteHow can someone forget their childhood? Wow, I really feel bad for Pip. He's so excited...and then Estella says she has no heart, and "don't expect too much of me." Pip is the same boy, excitied and confused like he was when he was a child. But Estella! She's changed a lot! I guess now she understands herself, and can say, "I have no heart." Maybe, before, she was playing with Miss. Havisham, but now she truly has no heart because of the way she was raised. Pip, I think, is trying to change her mind. He can't give up so soon, and I really hope he won't.

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how the director of this movie and I were even reading the same book. When I picture this scene I in no way expect Estella to be this down-to-Earth. I imagine her throwing herself on Pip because of his rise in society, but not caring so much for him. Nor do I expect her to admit she has no heart. I see her smile as more of a mischievious grin.
Point of view of Estella:
Estella sees Pip again for the first time and she likes what she sees. She thinks that maybe since he has come into money he is alright now... maybe even attractive. She knows her past actions are wrong but she doesn't blame herself for them. She really believes that because of how she is raised, she can't be a good person. She thinks maybe he is a little too in love, but maybe she'll give him a try. Maybe she has a problem with commitment just like Miss Havisham.

This is a picture I found of The Chesire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. All that you can see is his smile. This relates to the story through Estella. She plays games with Pip and makes illusions. She teases him just like the cat. You can see the cat only sometimes; Estella lets Pip kiss her, but only once. The only part of the cat that you can see in the picture is his big wide smile. It seems friendly and trustworthy... but it's not. Just like Pip thinks Estella is wonderful and exactly what he needs... but she's not. All Pip can see is her beauty and mystery (just like all you can see is the cat's smile: his best side). The picture is confusing and so is Estella.

ReplyDeleteThis is not what i had expected to see at all! Estella looked genuinely pleased to see Pip. She even smiled at him the whole time they were together. I was also surprised about how open and honest she was with Pip about everything. From her past memories, to how she is heartless, not letting Pip's kind words try to change her opinion. When she says, "Don't expect too much of me." It makes me think that she knows how great his expectations are and she doesn't want to take that away from him.

ReplyDeleteThat is not at all like I pictured Estella and Pip's relationship! I always thought Estella to be more cruel to Pip and not always be smiling at him and putting her arm through his. However, Pip acts just like I pictured him to when he's around Estella. He doesn't hide his admiration of her and her beauty very well. Estella and Miss Havisham can both see his love for Estella. I pick Estella's point of view in this scene and I think she likes Pip now but realizes that the way she has been brought up stops her from being able to love him like Biddy loves him. She also clearly states that she has no heart, almost like a warning to Pip because she doesn’t want him to get hurt. I think Estella has grown more mature and realized that Miss Havisham’s life doesn’t necessarily have to affect hers. And Miss Havisham is almost exactly like I pictured her. The only difference is that I always pictured her to be even skinnier, like a corpse.

ReplyDeleteI think that in this scene, from Estellas point of view, that she wants to see Pip and try to get onto a better level with him. I think that what she has seen in in him through the entire book had been his social class. I think that him becoming a gentleman has been more of a key for the lock Estella has upon Pip. He becoming a gentleman has given
Estella a reason to see Pip and "apologise" what she had done. This also shows that Estella still has bits of Pride engraved into her actions by not blameing herself for her actions when they were children. This clip was not what i invisioned though. I invisioned a more Passive Estella. I didnt expect her to give eye contact or to even smile. I was expecting her to be somewhat passive agressive towards Pip and not give him the respect he deserve. I do find it odd however that Estella would actually admit that she has no heart and feels no sympathy

ReplyDeleteOther than Miss Havisham, it was completely different than what I imagined it to be, and even Miss Havisham was different than expected being a less cruel and mean kind of person. The one thing that I found to be the most different than what I thought was Estella. I thought of her more to have a proud sneer or smirk on her face all the time being the kind of snobby person the book portrays her to be . But the clip showed a kinder, smiling kind of person. Pip was also not what I imagined him to be like. He really wasn't that "Pip" personality that would basically let people walk all over him. He seemed more confident, shown when he was kissing the hand of Miss Havisham and Estella.
From the point of view of Estella, I think she seems to be taking things too hard on herself. She denies to remember Pip crying at all, but yet she blames it on her cruel-heartlessness. Yet, I think Pip is right in telling her that she has a heart, she just doesn't know it or believe it yet. She has just been raised her whole life to break the hearts of others, that she seems to believe that she can't have a heart of her own.

ReplyDeleteThis certainly was the complete opposite of what I expected. First of all, Miss Havisham seemed almost normal and not the frightening creature that Pip made her out to be. And Pip seemed much more mature than I expected him to be. Plus Estella was nice and didn't crush Pip.
From Estella's point of view: She blames all she put Pip through years ago on her heartlessness. He doesn't believe it and says that she has a heart, and maybe he is right. She just doesn't know about her heart yet. Estella also tries to lower Pip's expectations of her because she knows she is only going to disappoint him.

ReplyDeleteFrom reading about Estella I imagened her as more of a follower person that was silent most of the time. Then she seems horrible and forgetfull when shedoes not rmember kissing Pip. This is because it was not an important event in her life like it was to Pip. Then Estella says she has no heart. Pip and I are shocked by that thinking that she would have learned a bit of a heart while she, Estella was learning. I also got the snce that estella had fealing for the less well of just was not allowed to share them with Miss Havisham around. I though she got those feelings for the poor when she lived with some other family before she was adopted. This seen seen is an important part of Pip's lfe because it in a movie. This seen does not seem very Important to Estella because there does not seem to be that much emontion put into her speaking.

ReplyDeletePip was surprised when Estella did not despise him anymore. She had matured and become a elegant lady(unlike Ms. Havisham, who looked really ugly). When they were walking in the garden, I think Pip was surprised when Estella did not remember making him cry, and when she said that she did not have a heart. Pip tries to tell her that even people like Estella that were raised a certain way can still have a heart,and that she just needs to dig depper to be able to find her heart and use it to see how she acted in the last few years.

ReplyDeleteThe song "Man of Constant Sorrow" by Bob Dylan is a great representation of Pip's life. Here are some of the lyrics and the explanations:
" I am a man of constant sorrow, I've seen trouble all my days, I'll say goodbye to Colorado, Where I was born and partly raised."
(This is when Pip was "brought up by hand" by his sister Mrs. Joe, so while he was born, he was not exactly "raised" completely because he had a rough childhood. This verse also explains when Pip had to leave to go to London. He had to say goodbye to the place where he was born and brought up by hand.)
"I'm going back to Colorado, the place that I started from, If I had known how bad you treated me, honey, I never would have come."
(Pip comes back to see Estella and Ms. Havisham, and right away he is surprised at the amount Estella has changed, both physically and mentally. He finds that she still does not think she has a heart, and that she really in a way has not changed much. She claims that the way she was raised impacted her life and her future, and this makes Pip try and tell her that she does have a heart, but she needs to dig to find it.)

This picture could relate to how Pip sees Estella. The lady in the picture is very pretty from what you can see of her. However, part of her is covered by a mask, so not all of her can be seen. Pip views Estella in a similar way. He sees her beautiful exterior and is infatuated by her, but he is unable to see all of her; he cannot see how cruel she is on the inside and how she has no interest in him at all besides wanting to make him suffer.

ReplyDeleteThis is how I thought Pip imagined it was going to be, but I never thought it would turn out like this. Estella seems kind and happy to see Pip. Nothing like the book described her in earlier chapters. Pip just seems in shock by the fact Estella is treating him like a person.
Pip's point of view
Ms. Havisham seems no different from the last time I saw her. The fact that Estella is waiting to see me fills me with joy. It is how I always imagined it, and Estella is a different person now that she respects me. She warns that she has no heart but I know she is wrong.

ReplyDeleteThis was an interesting clip. It is strange to see Estella talking so kindly and openly by admitting her past cruelties to Pip, but I think that this scene takes place later on in the book and that something may have happened to soften Estella a little bit that we haven't learned about yet. Even Miss Havisham seemed warmer. Pip still seems to be that eager little boy as he was before, and I reckon his feelings for Estella haven't changed at all. He is still filled with that hope that one day he and Estella can be together.

I was surprised at first when I saw this clip, but then I realized that it made sense. I figured that if Pip was to change his way and attain a status and fortune like Miss Havisham's or Estella, then I would expect Estella to attain a commoners sympathy throughout the years. However, Estella's life hardly changed while Pip's changed drastically which explain the situation of their personalities. Pip in this scene should be very disappointing. It would almost seem that all his years of hard work to be a gentleman were in vain because Estella is not the girl he expected.

ReplyDeleteI was really surprised when I saw that scene. From Estella's POV I think she knew that Pip still had feelings for her and she was thinking that now that he was a gentleman and had status and money that she could take him and gain all of that status and money without having to work for it. I think Ms. Havisham and Estella had this planned out so that Estella and Havisham would be the victors of this deal. I also think Estella now thinks Pip is attractive just because he has money and fame. There is definatly something going on.

Early on in Great Expectations, I saw a connection between Miss Havisham and Miss Pross (From a Tale of Two Cities.) When she was younger, Miss Havisham fell in love with a man, and they arranged to get married. Before the wedding, however, the man asked for a large sum of Miss Havisham’s money, so that he could maintain the brewery. Miss Havishma agreed, and gave the man the money he requested. On the wedding day, the groom did not show up. The man was just a set up from Miss Havisham’s step-brother, who despised her from childhood. The man and Miss Havisham’s step-brother shared the money that was wrongly obtained. Similarly, Miss Pross was cheated out of money from her brother, Solomon Pross.

While doing my review packet for Math this morning, I was listening to the Beatles. Enjoying a few of my favorite songs, I had a shocking revelation that a lot of their songs sounded like Great Expectations situations and characters. I found a few, so sorry if this is a little bit lengthy, but I find is EXTREMELY interesting.

This song is one of the creepiest and thought-provoking songs I have ever heard in my life, basically. The actual song is just random white noise with the occasional odd spoken word. Then, in the middle of the song (1:48 if you want to skip to the part in the video), They start repeating, "Number nine". At first, no one understood this song, but then some ingenious Beatles fan tried playing the record backwards. This revealed a message, which I won’t go deeper into, but you can read about on the Wikipedia link!
Now, after all of that, this STILL relates to Great Expectations! The white noise and confusing spoken and scary lyrics are just like Miss Havasham and her house. She wears a wedding dress and has all of her clocks set to 20 minutes to 9 for a reason not known to Pip. While reading, I found the whole setting weird and creepy, but interesting, and I wanted to learn more. In the chapters I read a few days ago, I learned about her betrayal. This reading was like playing the record backwards. It was such a revelation and it was very interesting. I loved the whole mystery aspect and I hope there are more in the story.
Ok so again, sorry this post is so long, but I got really into this and I kind of “nerded out” so thanks for reading this far! I hope you got something out of this:)

ReplyDeleteI found this clip to be very odd. I pictured Miss Havisham as a tidy well-done lady but ehr hair was disorderly. I don't think anyone expected Estella to be open with Pip and acknowledges that she has no heart.From Pip's POV, I think that he thought that he had a chance of winning Estella's heart when he first came to the house and saw her smiling at him. I wouldn't have recalled the past with their first meeting because that was when he was low-class and it showed her superiority over him. I'm not sure why he showed how he feeled about her by the way that he looked at her.

ReplyDeleteI was very suprised when I watched this scene. The way that both Pip and Estella acted suprised me. On the other hand, Miss Havisham was what I expected. From Estella's point of view, I could tell that she knew that Pip liked her. I also saw that Pip acted much differently coming back. Both characters seemed unlike their natural selves. I wonder what is going to happen in the future chapters?

ReplyDeleteThat was completely unexpected. I could never have imagined Estella being so gentle and kind to Pip. She seems to have matured and come to the realize some of the effects of being raised by Miss Havisham. Before the video, I thought of Pip being a very timid and weak person. However, in the video, it shows Pip being stronger and suaver. It's like he went through some kind of metamorphosis to become a charming young man. Despite all these changes, I can still tell that Pip still wants Estella's love. It was most obvious when he rushed to her and kissed her hand. Based on all of the progress of his training, I believe that Pip can go the distance and find Estella's heart.

You can tell that Estella does really have a heart for others. Pip's dream is coming true. I imagined Mrs. Havisham being a little more cold than she was in this clip. Shes seemed so nice and warm. I really do wish the the characters seemed this nice in the book.

Didn't see that one coming. I mean, even though I had a feeling that Miss Havisham would be kind of a mess of an old lady, I kind of imagined her as someone who at least looks like somebody who was ONCE attractive. Not to be cold or anything. And Estella! Ohmygosh! She was so much nicer than I thought. Dickens seemed to portray her as such a haughty snobby rich girl, but she seemed so sweet. She even told Pip that she was raised not to have a heart and not to blame her. I think it looked like even though she was supposed to hurt him, that she didn't want to because she had pity on him and basically warned him not to continue to persue her. But... I have to say that I pictured them still a lOT younger than that. They looked like 40 (minor exaggeration) and I pictured them to still look young.

ReplyDeleteAt first I dinnot realize that this clip was for a later part in the book, so the first thing that I thought was that Pip was no longer a young child! Nevertheless, this movie clip made it appear as though Miss Havisham purposely invited Pip over so that he could see Estella; Miss Havisham wanted Pip and Estella to walk together. I believe that Estella is more understanding and open than she has ever been. She bluntly tells Pip , "I have no heart". I admire Estella for admitting this to Pip. I feel that it is a warning to Pip that she may break his heart... again. Both characters have mutured a lot since the beginning of the book. Estella's point of view is that she wants Pip to realize and accept the person that she is.

Pip seems exactly like I imagined him. He has become the gentleman he dreamed of becoming and no longer has coarse hands or a rural accent. He carries himself high, and is delighted to see Estella.
Estella is obviously not what most people would think, with her kind and warm actions and openess towards Pip. But I had an idea that Estella would change through the book, especially because of how simple she was in the beginning. She had one purpose then, which was to break Pip's heart. But now, after he has made a man of himself, she shows a different side and cares for him.
Mrs. Havisham is the exact embodyment of the person I had in my head. Looking old and haggish, with a directing and commanding air.
From Pip's POV
This place is exactly how I remember it, whether that is good or bad I am unsure. Mrs. Havisham is exactly as I had left her, even in the same dress. I cant believe Estella is here, and very warm-hearted too! What a change! I am glad for our walk in the garden. It is so refreshing to talk to her again. She seems to have a hard time remembering what occured on those ill-fated days. She blames it on her absent heart, but I know that one day she will discover that it was there all along.

ReplyDeleteI was very surprised of how kind Miss Havisham was to Pip, which is likely due to a reason. This may be because Pip finally turns into a gentlemen as seen in the clip. I was also very surprised of how Estella treated Pip too.

ReplyDeleteThis is not how iexpected Estella to be at all, but Miss Havisham and Pip I understood more. Estella as actually kind of nice and Pip was a lovesick puppy. From Pip's point of view the only thing that mattered was Estella. When he walks in he is immedieatley searching for Estella, and when he finds her he is so overjoyed and can't contain his happiness. When they are out in the garden he can't help but hang on her every word and be so intransed with her. It's almost like she is the center of his universe. He wants her attention so badly he is willing to do anything for it. He tries to get this attention by reminding her of when they were younger, but she blows him off. I think Estella is trying to lure Pip into a trap, and then she is going to squish him like a bug, but Pip would be to happy with the attention to notice. I think Pip might be able to touch Estella's heart, but he might have to sacrifice himself in the process.

This clip was much different than the modern movie that I watched a few months ago. Im my movie, Estella is much more like she is in the book. In this clip it seemed like she truely liked Pip and was fighting Ms. Havisham's men-hating ways. In the book and my movie Estella has a cocky rude manor and wont give Pip any kindness at all.I feel the clip showed Estella as how i feel she should be. In my head that's how she should act and how she should treat Pip.

I couldn't help but silently laugh through the whole scene. Why is it funny?- i really don't know. The whole scene was nothing as to how I pictured Estella or Pip. Miss Havisham however was very well portrayed with her wedding dress and demanding of actions "Go out to the garden the both of you and walk and talk together." Similarly from the time when Miss Havisham tells Pip to "play", she still make clear orders as to what she wants. Estella was very genuine and kind in this scene, however she still reminds Pip of her lack of remembrance to her childhood actions such as making Pip cry since he meant nothing to her. Estella's cruelty is seen once again when she says that Pip meant nothing to her,and why she should care about him in the movie scene. Clearly she doesn't share the same feeling towards Pip as he does to her. However she does keep a smile on her face the whole time they talk in the garden. I felt irony through while watching this scene, and Pip looks thrilled to see Estella when his face brightens up at their reunion and again Estella did smile slightly. Estella seemed a little too courteous and amiable in this scene.

I was extremely suprised to see how Estella acted towards Pip. She seemed much more warm hearted and kind. She just seems so much sweeter than she is in the book, where Dickens portrays her as a mean, snobby girl.
I expected to see Miss Havisham more disheveled than she was. Other than her hair, she didn't really seem as.. messy?
Since even more time had passed, you would think she would look disgusting. Even worse than that, even though that was pretty bad itself. Like Estella, she also seemed a lot more sincere and welcoming.

ReplyDeleteThis entire scene was the opposite of what I pictured Estella and Pip to act. I pictured Pip to be much more suprised and happy to see Estella. Has he changed or was it just the actor? I also expected Estella to act very cold to him like she has before. Also, I found it weird that she came out and said she has no heart. While Estella was acting so different, she also had some charcteristics of the Estella in the book. She pretended like she didn't remember any of those times just to mess with his head. SO in some ways this scene was typical and in other ways it was completely the opposite.

ReplyDeleteThat clip just proved to me just how awful Estella is. Forgive me, but I don't like Estella. She's a meanie-head. But I do have some sort of respect for her and her ways of getting Pip to fall for her. She has a really interesting way of choosing her words and changing her emotions to suit how Pip is feeling at the moment. Perhaps I'm just looking at her for all the bad things she has done and how she was raised, but I believe that even now, although they were acting like jolly good old pals, I still think she is toying with Pip. He's much more grownup now, and Estella realizes that. She's using her little clever devilish brain to make him think they are good friends and whatnot, but I think she's just getting him comfortable just so she can throw him down into the dirt again.
I also like how she says she has no heart. She's a smart one, that Estella. She knows that since Pip is so hopelessly in love with her, he'd say just about anything to lift her up. She puts herself down, Pip raises her up, she laughs, and grabs Pip's arm. she is flirting with him, making it seem like to him what he is saying is getting through to her and she is actually appreciating his comments about how she is just too good to not have a heart. I actually have one question about that: what kind of whackjob calls a person nice when she's been nothing but cruel to him as long as they've known each other? Estella has no problem whatsoever telling Pip she hates him. But of course, since she's so beautiful, he can't help but be in love with her. And i really do believe Estella knows this. She can read him like an open book. She's still playing with him; toying with his emotions. Even though they seem like they are happy together in this scene, I know she's just messing with him. And even the look on miss havisham's face when she told the two to go out into the garden tells me that Estella and her made some sort of a plan for Estella to act this way, just so she can kick him to the curb again. That's what I got from Estella in this scene. I guess I just can't trust her, even when she is happy and smiling.

I think this song sort of describes how Pip must feel about Estella. He has had his heartbroken by her countless times, but he still cannot get over how much he thinks he loves her. This song is the Jaws Theme called Swimming by Brand New (i have no idea how i made this connection), but its about this guy who has had his heart broken by a girl and he just cannot get over her.
And we learn as we age.

This explains the videoclip in the post. I think Pip showed up at Miss Havisham's knowing Estella would be there. He was naturally excited since he still believes he loves her. But down inside, he probably knows that Estella is just going to hurt him again, because he has grown older and learned from mistakes. He just cannot get over her.

That was not how i would expect their first meeting since they were kids to be at all! For this i choose Pip's point of view. It's been a long time since they have last seen each other and he just wants to let her know how he feels. she then just stops him in his tracks and says that she didn't care for him much then when he brought up the time when she made him cry. i mean at least she is honest, but he just wants her to love him even though she won't. She even said that by the way she was brought up that it would not work between them, yet he still tries anyway.

ReplyDeleteThis is not how i would have expected the meeting between Pip and Estella would have gone. it was so straight forward and revealing. from Pip's point of veiw, he is so distracted by Estella, that he doesn't believe tht Estella is telling him the truth. to Pip, he is trying to bring back memories of when they were kids, but he doesn't understand that she is still the same heartless girl that he had known years before. From pip's veiw, Estella is happy to see him and wants to talk to him, while really Estella doesn't care how Pip feels in the least. She was raised this way, and still is the same. Pip wants to be with Estella again, just like they used to be as kids, or at least the way he thought they used to be as kids. My opinion on this is that this is much like what i think would have happened myself when Pip and Estella met again. I think that they both will have matured, but Pip will still want Estella, even though she openly admits that she doesn't remember what they did as kids, and that she doesn't have a heart. However, i never would have imagined that Estella would have been as straight forward as she was.

ReplyDeleteI didn't imagine that scene the way it was portrayed in the video. It wasn't a slow and sweet conversation but rather a straight forward, let's get to the point talk. I chose Estella's perspective for this. The way Estella was acting toward Pip was suprising, for she was being funny and kept smiling. Of course she has to through in her rude, harsh comments, but they seemed to be in an almost sarcastic voice. Though people didn't flirt the way we do now, I want to say it was as if she was flirting with Pip. This clip was a perfect example to show the true intent of Estella's relationship with Pip. For she merely played him, acting as if she enjoyed his company and they were good friends, when really she's just a jerk to him messing with his feelings like that.

I honestly didn't expect Pip and Estella not to meet for so many years - nor did I expect their meeting at Miss Havisham's house. I'm relieved that they can have a conversation without Estella being rude to Pip, although there isn't much reason to at that point. From Pip's point of view, I would say that Estella is quite the same as she was a child. She is blunt and straight to the point and is still a "heart-breaker". She is much more polite towards Pip, however. I think she's this way because of how Miss Havisham treats him with more dignity and because he looks and talks more like a gentleman than ever. But, other than these few differences, Estella seems quite harsh still, and I'm hoping Pip won't fall for her.

ReplyDeleteWhen reading this scene I frist off did not picture them this old yet, but in their late teens. It was wierd to me how Estella was so straight up with Pip and told him that she has no heart and kind of warned him about herself and what she could do. I was also surprised though that Estella wasn't putting herself all over Pip and trying to get his full attention. But, near the end she did grab his arm seem to try and let a little emotion and feeling out. Pip also didn't seem that much "in love" with Estella and didn't show many feelings for her in this scene.

Also, I don't believe he ever kissed Mrs. Havisham's or Estella's hand in the past, which displays he has grown into a different person. He treats Estella with respect, but all she does is bring him down. I thought when Pip stated, "This is where you made me cry" that it was vise-versa at that moment. I think Estella had been depressed because she couldn't feel any human-like emotions. Pip realized that she's still the same-old Estella by how she responds to his kindness.

ReplyDeleteI was a little bit shocked by this video. Estella seems to have changed greatly, while Pip only seems more refined. I was expecting it to be the other way around. Estella seemed to be more nice and forthcoming with Pip instead of cruel and mean to him. I was also impressed at how deep Estella was in evaluating herself and admitting that she was cruel and heartless. Pip seemed to be unaffected by this statement because he still loves her. BUt I think he is heading down a road that he will later regret. I'd like to end this comment with two sayings, one about Pip, the other Estella: "love is blind" and "the more things change, the more they stay the same".

EXTRA CREDIT - Comparing GE characters to characters in other texts.
It seems that the role in status and personalities of the characters in Great Expectations are similar to that of A Tale of Two Cities. Characters like Lucie Manette and Dr. Manette were of a higher class than most people in England. They are portrayed as nice and kind people. However, the lower classes in France such as Madame Defarge and other poor people were vicious and grudging. The highest classes in society in France, the aristocrats, were portrayed as heartless people and only cared for money.
In Great Expectations, Herbert seems to be like Charles Darnay or Dr. Manette as he is a high classed gentleman who is kind. The two convicts in the beginning of the book were similar to Madame Defarge as they were vicious and poor. Finally, Mrs. Havisham and Estella are similar to French aristocrats in A Tale of Two Cities because they have little sympathy for others and only care about money and status.

I certainly did not expect this meeting between Pip and Estella to be so open with Pip, you can see how they both have matured and are being so kind. From Estella's point of view, she sees pip as a much less awkward and shy man, compared to his old boyish self, Pip is much more of a suave gentleman, and Estella might actually be willing to give him a stance. Although Ms. Havisham is basically just how i expected her to be, weird looking and still trying to get the two closer just to tear them apart. The way Havisham tells them to go into the garden shows her intentions. Pips feelings toward Estella may still not be answered, but his speech is definitely getting him progress toward Estella's cold heart.

ReplyDeleteI agree with the other, Ms. Havisham is what I pictured her to be. However, Estella's kindness to pip was a big surprise to me! She told Pip that she was sorry for hurting his feelings in their childhood days; but she also explains to him that breaking boys' hearts was how she was brought up. Estella seemed very sincere to Pip throughout the entire clip, but I just think it's too good to be true. I still feel as though she is trying to trick Pip but I guees we will find out if she was sincere or not in later chapters.

ReplyDeleteThis clip is so different from the book! I was suprised at how warm and open Estalla was and of how mature and sure of himself Pip was. I expected that Estella would still be cruel and diminishing, but she is friendly. However, she does tell Pip that she is heartless. I beleive that this is a warning to him not to fall in love with her. Its like saying that she'll break his heart again adn that she can't help it because of the way she was raised. It does seem like she feels bad about it though, because she tells him that she is a bad person.

ReplyDeleteI really liked the clip, but it seemed very very different from the book. The clip showed Estella completely different. Yes, it did have her admit that she was heartless and had no sympathy, but she did so in a pleasant way, which was weird. I imagined her sounding more cold-shouldered. Pip was generally the same, and so was Miss Havasham. However, the way they interacted was different from the book because Pip seemed a lot less afraid of her. This might be the portrayal of Pip in the movie, or just Pip's maturity showing.

However in the video she can put a smile on her face but yet still bring Pip down. She almost did it in a creepy but yet pleasant way. In addition to, Pip in the movie clip seemed to be a lot more in love with Estella. For example., his immediate reaction to see Estella and his puppy eyes when he saw her after greeting Ms. Havisham.

I never pictured Estella being this sincere or apologetic. She does remember when she made him cry and the kiss but hse doesn`t want Pip to know she does so he wont be hurt by her. This clip made me think of Salvador Dali`s painting The Persistence of Memory. Inside Estella is remembering her childhood and what happened between her and Pip. She knows she hurt him and doesn`t want to do that again. She will always remember she just wont le ti t be known.

Pip still wants Estella, and he will do anything he can to get her.
Miss. Havisham, on the other hand, looks similar to the way I pictured her. Her wedding gown gives her a ghostly appearance! She looks old, though.

ReplyDeleteThis video really makes so many things clear. While reading the text all you have to go by is your mental description of the characters. I really wish i did not watch this because I liked the movie inside my head better than this. However, this movie shows how old Miss Havisham really looks. Also, you can observe how Pip has matured since his first visit when he cried to now. The same goes with Estella, she even states how she did not remember because she had no heart, and now she has matured greatly since that scene to this moment. It also is a much happier scene in sense than the stereotypical Statis House visit. Miss Havisham doesn't shun him for kissing her hand and such. To add, Pip is very nervous, you can hear it in his voice and see it in words. He keeps on bringing up past memories which implies he is without a subject to talk about. I'm sure at this day in his life, he is hormone crazed still and looking to receive the slightest little kiss. That is Joey McLane getting inside Pip's head.

I think that things look a lot brighter for Pip and Estella's relationship in the future. Much brighter than it was in the past. Their relationship will be stronger, and they will remain close friends.
This clip made me laugh because Estella was so point blank and said "i have no heart". i thought that it was interesting that she knew and admitted she had no heart, most people would deny that in an instant, but she is the first to say it. Although, maybe she made that assumption a little to quickly, before anyone has tried to find her heart...
