My favorite xharacter so far is Ms. Havisham because of the spooky and suspensful mood that she gives to the text. Like when she tells Pip to walk her arond the table and how the lights are always off in her house. Also the wya that she is always adding her own twist to things such as wanting Pip so much adn then not wanting him at all. the final reason is because you nver know what will come out of her mouth weather it is taslking about her own death or simply about life itself.

My favorite character so far has got to be the "pale young gentleman", also known as Herbert. He seems to be quite the insider, providing the reader with valuable information that will probably play a role later on in the novel. For instance, he talks to Pip about Ms. Havisham and how she was betrayed by her lover and also her half-brother. This, to me, provides a strong motive for why Ms.Havisham keeps telling Estella to "break his heart"- she wants Pip to feel like she did when she got her heart broken by a man hired by her own half-brother. In addition to being an insider, Herbert proves to be much more mature than Pip, and in turn, making him much wiser. For instance, Herbert used to have feelings for Estella, to the point at which he believed they were going to be betrothed. However, he soon realized she was simply playing him, and she had never truly had feelings for him. Pip does not realize this applies to him as well-lacking the certain maturity that Herbert possesses.

My favorite character in "Great Expectations" is Joe. He is a very kind, wise, and good-hearted man. Even when he is treated badly by Mrs. Joe and Pip, he doesn't seem to mind because he loves them. He is misunderstood by Pip when Pip is young. Pip thinks of him as an equal, uneducated, common man. However, Joe is much more than that. When he is talking to Pip about Mrs. Joe, he calls her "A fine figure of a woman" even though she is mean and rude to him. Also, Joe says to Pip "When I offered to your sister to keep company, and to be asked in church, at such times as she was ready and willing and ready to come to the forge, I said to her, 'And bring the poor little child. God bless the poor little child,' I said to your sister, 'there's room at the forge!'". Not only does this conversation prove how much Pip means to Joe, it also shows just how big his heart is. This unusual kindness isn't just for Pip, but also for everyone in need. When Pip's convict tells Joe he stole the pie, Joe is fine he did because the convict was starving. Most people would be horrified that anybody, especially a convict, stole from them. This is why I believe is the best character in the book. I hope he becomes happier than he seemed to be after Pip left for London.

My favorite character so far is Estella. Its not the way she is porttrayed in the text however. Its what is behind the text that makes me like her. The mystery behinfd her sparks many questions. At this point, I dont what she is. I dont believe what Ms. Havisham has built is actuall what the real Estella is. What is Estella like? What is she thinking? Does she believe in what she has been taught or does she have the mind of a renegade? Is she one of the few who substitute what her "parent" taught her, for what she actually believes?

The way Estella is portrayed in this part of the book is like the wolf from red riding hood. She has the beauty of an angel according to the book. She has the nice and soft look that was given to her at birth. But after birth is when her personality starts to develop. After birth, she was raised by a sociopath. on the outside, she is a nice looking person, but, as portrayed by dickens, She is a wolf on the inside. The biggest question i have, is she REALLY a wolf?

So far I don't really have persay a "favorite character", but I think if I had to choose I would say Estella. The reason for this is more that I find her an intrugieing, and mysterious character, than that I like her personality wise. She is cruel, and mean to Pip, who does nothing but admire her. She puts him down and makes him feel horrible about himself. This type of behavior makes me wonder, what type of person would do such mean actions to someone so innocent, and have no obvious regret. She is a tangled web of character, and I find that intriguing. She is a very interesting character, and greatley contributes to the text, because even with all her cruel meanness she is stunningly beautiful and Pip can't get her off his mind. She has great depth to her and I think that will only increase as we learn more about her.

My favorite character so far in Great Expectations is Miss Havisham. Shes my favorite character because she is in my opinion the farthest from normal that there is in this book. When Pip first meets her, he is kind of spooked by the room lit by candles, and all the clocks being stopped at twenty minutes to nine. There are really no other characters like Miss Havisham in any other book that i have read. Also i find it interesting that she enjoys messing with peoples emotions, like how she has trained Estella to break the heart of every guy she meets, and how when she was talking to Estella about Pip, she said "Break his heart" right in front of Pip, almost as if to let Pip know that Estella was going to mess with him and break his heart.

So far, my favorite character in the story would have to be Joe. It's not necessarily because he's so deep or mysterious, but because he has a gentle innoncence and kindness to him that the other characters seem to lack. They all have alterior motives, arrogance, or simply too much knowledge to be able to have such an honest kindness. I think that the best way to describe Joe is the way that Pip did at the beginning of the book, "a larger species of child." I think that it's Joe's childishness that enables him to be so kind and generous, even to the point where he would forgive a convict becuase he wouldn't have him go hungry,or court a woman becuase he feels pity for her and her younger brother. I also admire Joe becuase he is deeper than he appears. Like when he tells Pip that if he can't get uncommon by going straight he certainly can't do it by going crooked. He also displays another side of himself when he explains to Pip why he lets Mrs. Joe bully him. I think that Joe is not only a lovable character but also one that people (including Pip) should admire and maybe even strive to be more like. Not in the sense that people should be more ignorant but that they should try to be honest and kind and good for no other reason than to be honest and kind and good. That's why Joe is my favorite character, so far.

    Extra Credit:
I think that the song "Jar of Hearts" by Christina Perri really applies to the relationship between Pip and Estella.
    Here are the lyrics:
I know I can't take one more step towards you
Cause all that's waiting is regret
And don't you know I'm not your ghost anymore
You lost the love I loved the most

I learned to live half alive
And now you want me one more time

And who do you think you are
    Running 'round leaving scars
    Collecting your jar of hearts
    And tearing love apart
    You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Who do you think you are

I think that this song describes what Pip might say to Estella if he ever realizes that she's just playing with him. He'd say that he couldn't come near her because he knows that in the long run he'd regret it and that Estella lost his love for him. He's also living half a life right now, that is he can't live his life to the fullest because of his obsession with Estella and what she's done to him. I also think that the chorus hits the nail on the head when it comes to Estella. She runs around and leaves scars, she's cold and mean to Pip, and (I think this is the biggest one), she is collecting a jar of hearts. She toys with men, steals their hearts, and then breaks them. Of course, this only applies to what has happened in the story so far because Estella may actually love Pip and just be playing hard to get or Pip may never realizes that Estella's flirting was all a big joke. Still, this song really reminded me of their relationship of sorts.

My favorite character would be Estella because she seems like the character that has been manipulated into something she may not be. Miss Havisham has taught her to “disregard the male sex” as said by Herbert, because of what her fiancé had done to her. I don’t think she would be that way if she had been raised a different way. I also find her to be sly and conniving because although she talks down to Pip, Pip still admires her from afar. I do not get that when she humiliates the boy, she has no regret, so I don’t understand if that’s out of self-image or from Miss Havisham. Estella is a beautiful girl in the eyes of many, and I think we will find out her true identity as the story unfolds.

As the book progresses and we learn more about each character, I start to have certain likes and dislikes about almost all of them. So far, my favorite character is Estella. There is some sort of air of mystery to her, intriguing me to read on and find out more and more about her. I always enjoy scenes in the book where Estella is mentioned. It's intriguing how Pip loves the beautiful Estella so much, even though she is being "trained" by Miss Havisham to break the hearts of men. But, I don't really believe the Estella fully enjoys taking on that task. Miss Havisham once found the love of her life who then betrayed her, and actually had been working with her half-brother, which caused Miss Havisham to never love another man. I think Estella pretends to listen and comply by Miss Havisham's rules of not loving any men, but deep down Estella probably wants that one experience of falling in love, like Miss Havisham once had. That probably explains why she leads Pip on so much. But alas, she has to listen to Miss Havisham who adopted her and probably gives her nice sums of money.

Ms. Hedrick said that we have all felt like Pip before, and while I agree with that, I also feel like we have all been a little like Estella at one point in our lives. We have all been mean to someone who was only ever nice to us- which as actually something that Pip has done also (how he acted snooty towards Joe and Biddy once he got all that money from Miss Havisham). Estella is an interesting character, and I believe that as the story progresses, we will learn more and more about her, and she will greatly change not only Pip's expectations, but also the way in general that the story progresses.

My favorite character so far is Mr. Wemmick. Pip describes him to be "imperfectly chipped" and with "dints" in his face. This description leads me to believe that Mr. Wemmick outside of the workplace is a very warm, happy man because his "dints" or dimples are engraved into his face even if he is not smiling. He was also once a foreigner to London, which leads me to believe that there is more to his story and personality then what Dickens has described so far in the novel. This is also supported by when Wemmick replies to Pips handshake saying"I have gotten out of it-- except at the very last." Clearly, there is more to Wemmick than what Dickens is portraying thus far.

    Joe.
He's just such a sweetie. He's so innocent, and he's always there for Pip. "Ever the best of friends we are."
Also, in Chapter 5 when the convict Magwitch confesses to eating the pie, Joe replies with "God knows you're welcome to it--so far as it was ever mine. We don't know what you have done, but we wouldn't have you starved to death for it, poor miserable fellow-creature." which really brings out Joe's good nature.

  12. Drew Hutchinson, 7th period. My favorite character in the book so far is Miss Havisham. She is really interesting and kind of weird to me. I like how she stopped all her clocks at 20 minutes to nine and keeps her wedding dress on. It really shows how much of a heartbreak it was to her that she was stood up on her wedding day. It also shows about how she kind of lives in the past and refuses to forget past memories. Also, it interests me about how vengeful and spiteful she is towards men because of what ONE man did to her. All in all, what makes her my favorite is all her interesting mannerisms.

As the story goes on i become more and more fond of Estella. I have love who she is. The main reason that i love her character is because she has a split personality. When she is around Ms. Havisham, she is very quiet and listens to what Ms. Havisham says, usually "Break his heart!", but also when she is around Pip i feel like there is a lightness to the conversations . Although Pip has feelings for her, and Biddy too, but the way that she gives him chances continuously. I feel that although she may be told to do one thing that her heart is telling her to do another, and thats how people can connect with her as a character.

My favorite character is Herbert Pocket. I like how he is so down-to-Earth. Even though his family is wealthy enough for him to live somewhere else, he puts up with his trashy accomodations. He is fine living with only what he needs to survive. He also has a great, positive view of life. Even though he lost the fight to Pip in an earlier chapter, he is a winner in his mind because he did his best. Also, his past makes me curious: how did he just "tumble up" and become such a gentleman? What happened while he was at Mrs. Havisham's? But just the fact that he went to get fruit just for Pip's arrival makes me like him. He is so kind to Pip!

My favorite character in “Great Expectations” would have to be Estella. I feel like Estella has one of those dirty little secrets that nobody really knows. She also comes off to me as one of the everyday girls that boys come encounter with in their life time. Estella is very aware that Pip falls head over heels for her every time he looks at her, but Estella has a “hard to get attitude”. I know every girl has been in this same situation, to make a guy want her rather than just throwing herself at the boy, she covers it up with a rock hard attitude that makes it seem like she has no interest in him. I feel like Estella really does have feelings for Pip but she wraps herself in this dark blanket to cover it up. I feel like I and every other girl can relate to Estella and understand the reasoning Estella acts as she does in the text, that is why she is my favorite character.

My favoite caracter in Great Expectation is Orlick. I like Orlike because he stood up for what he belived and was not afreid to. I also like Orlike because he was sympathetic with Mrs. Joe even though he had, had an argument with her just a few hours before she was hurt. These two parts makes Orlick a very complicated minor caracter.

My favorite character is Joe. I think his character shows how we should be living life. He finds good in people that most would find negativity in, for example, Mrs. Joe. He seems so willingl to learn and he doesn't let people get to him(unless you count Ms. Havisham because I would be quite intimidated in her presence as well) and he lives his life as it comes. Joe is an honest man and has an open heart towards mst people. Some people live their lives finding negatives in every situation, noot willing to learn new things, and taking everything someone says to them personally. If those people were to use Joe as a role model, their lives may be much more joyful and fulfilling.

So far, my favorite character is Estella because right when you think you know her, you learn something else that changes your entire opinion. She was a jerk to Pip yet he fell for her hard and the reader started to hate her. Then Herbert explained Miss Havisham's story and how Estella came into the picture and you start to feel a little sympathetic towards her because of her upbringing. Basically, Estella is a total mystery to the reader and that's why I like her.

My favorite character is Joe. He kind of reminds me of a little kid, how he can't read well and he can't talk well. I love how he treats Mrs. Joe and Pip. He acts like less of a parent and more of a friend to Pip. They are "ever the best of friends..." I also like how he is so sweet to Mrs. Joe and he loves her even though she's mean and abusive to him and Pip. He sees the good in Mrs. Joe when nobody else can. He's just so sweet to everybody he knows.

My favorite character in the book so far is definitely Miss Havasham. When Pip first met Miss Havasham, she was very mysterious and eccentric. She wore a wedding dress, yet was not married. She would flaunt Estella in Pip's face, and then snatch her up from out of his reach just as fast. Her whole situation, attitude, and actions were very condescending and confusing to Pip until recent chapters I have read.

When we learn about Miss Havasham's fiancée’s betrayal and all of her grief over it, we understand her motives more. We see how much she is driven by regret and bitter anger. She teaches Estella to push away men and break their hearts, just like they have done to Miss Havasham.

Even though Miss Havasham is overreacting to a situation of the past in a bitter and heartless way, we can see into her motives, which is a major step in Dickens’s character development. I can appreciate and even grow to like Miss Havasham not in spite of all of her faults, but because of all of her faults.

My favorite character in the book so far would have to be Herbert Pocket. Also known as the "Pale Faced Gentleman." Though when he is first introduced, he seems juvenile in his actions wanting to fight for Estella, he really grows and matures as the story progresses. When Herbert is reintroduced, he is very kind to Pip, showing his generosity by getting him fruit for after dinner, knowing Pip would be familiar with that sort of food since he was from the country. I also like Herbert because, unlike Pip, he is quite fulfilled with his life. Pip is always wanting to be accepted into the high society life, whereas, while Herbert is apart of it, he doesn't strive to fit in, he wants to be himself. Though he and Pip are close in age, the maturity level of Herbert is much greater, making him a more respectable person in my opinion. :)

Estella is currently my favorite character regardless of how mean she first seems. She's such a complex and mysterious person, with layers and faces of personalities. She may put a "poker face" with different people but the real her is so hidden and buried that it doesn't come out all the time. She certainly keeps Pip on his toes! I look forward to see how she matures and changes.

So, my favorite character in the book is Mr. Jaggers. His personality strikes me more than anything else about him. He is very honest with everyone and doesn't try to hide anything. An example is when Pip comes to Mr. Jaggers to get some money to buy the furniture from the coffee shop so that he can retain his bedroom in Barnard's Inn. Mr. Jaggers gives Pip as much money as he asks for, without holding back or going back on his word by trying lower the amount of money Pip wants. Another thing about Mr. Jaggers that I like is how confident and powerful he is. Mr. Jaggers seems like an extremely talented lawyer that always knows what he is doing. This can be seen when Wemmick takes Pip to see "Mr. Jaggers 'at it." The whole court seems to be struck with awe at the power of Mr.Jaggers. He strikes down anyone that makes an "admission." Mr. Jaggers is, in a way, someone I want to become. His confidence and power to make people listen to what he has to say are definitely qualities I would like to gain. Another reason why I like Mr. Jaggers is because one of the fields I am considering for my future is criminal law and he's an amazing lawyer.

So far, my favorite character in Great Expectations is Joe. I feel that Joe is so kind and sincere. He may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he sure is the sweetest. Joe said that he wouldn't have let the convict go hungry, and he never abandons Pip. Joe will always be loyal even if Pip lies and is mean to him. Joe is like a true parent, showing unconditional love for his "child." Joe has good advice because of his worldly experiences. Joe is respectful, honest, and hardworking. He does the best he can with what he has been given. Plus, Joe is very optimistic, trying to make the best of situations and be content. If the world were more like Joe, everyone would be nicer and take better care of each other.

My favorite character so far in the book is Joe. He is kind-hearted and nice without even realizing it.He is especially nice to Pip and he teaches Pip what is right and what is wrong through the book. For example, he tells Pip that it is better to tell the truth than to lie because better things happen to people who tell the truth. He is even nice to people who belong in the Hulk. One example is that he tells Pip's convict that Joe doesn't know what the convict did, but nobody should starve. Then, Joe told Pip's convict that it was okay that the convict took the pie because Joe doesn't like people starving. I think that Joe would be the perfect role model for Pip.

I'd have to say my favorite character would have to be Wemmick. He's all focus at the offic and a jack-of-all trades at his castle. Plus pip describes him in more detail than most other characters."I found him to be a dry man, rather short in stature, with a square wooden face, whose expression seemed to have been imperfectly chipped out with a dull-edged chisel. There were some marks in it that might have been dimples, if the material had been softer and the instrument finer, but which, as it was, were only dints. The chisel had made three or four of these attempts at embellishment over his nose, but had given them up without an effort to smooth them off.I judged him to be a bachelor from the frayed condition of his linen, and he appeared to have sustained a good many bereavments; for he wore at least four mourning rings, besides a brooch representing a lady and a weeping willow at a tomb with an urn on it. I noticed, too, that several rings and seals hung at his watch-chain, as if he were quite laden with rembrances of departed friends. He had glittering eyes-small, keen, and black-and thin wide mottled lips. He had had them, to the best of my belief, from forty to fifty years."
I know its long but it goes into so much detail and he has such a personality that it just struck me as odd that a character like him would look like that.

My favorite character in the book is without a doubt, Joe. He can look past the bad and see the good in people, and although he is uneducated, he might the wisest character in the story. For example, in chapter seven, Pip and Joe have a long talk, and Joe explains his feelings for Mrs. Joe. To the reader she may be uncaring, harsh, and even viscous at times, Joes tells Pip that he sees her as a great woman. Also, when the convict admits to stealing their food, Joe says that he would rather the convict take what is unrightfully his than starve to death. This shows that Joe can care for others no matter who they are or what they have done. Finally, I really admire how Joe is completely satisfied with his life, and that he does not once complain about anything; while in comparison, this is Pip's major conflict. Dicken's does a phenomenal job at portraying Joe as a sweet, hard-working, unselfish man.

Wow im surprised. why does Pip, time and time again, strive to please Estella. The one that treats Pip as a worthless and common boy???? I mean there's only so much rejection a boy can take before he gives up. Is it to show her that he can become uncommon? Or because he thinks that becoming uncommon will give him a chance with her. How can he still admire her after how she's been treating him? What exactly is attracting Pip to Estella besides her beauty?

My favorite character is definitely Estella. She reminds me of the girls who could get any guy they want, but choose none of them, just for the thrill of being a heart breaker. She even gets the pale young gentleman, Herbert, and Pip to fight over who gives her a kiss. The main reason why I like her is that I can relate to her, along with every other girl. We've all had that one guy we really like, who we find out likes us in return. We push it to the side and act like we don't care, even though we are shrieking and jumping around on the inside.
Estella clearly knows that Pip has fallen for her, and I think she secretly likes him a bit inside, but she acts like she doesn't care. She acts this way with every boy who comes to have feelings for her, and I find it rather amusing.
I just love that I can relate to her and feel exactly what she's feeling, yet also see how it affects the people at whom her behaviors are directed. She makes me think and consider doing things differently.

My favorite character is definitely Joe. Although he's not very smart, like from how he can't even spell his own name, Joe is very wise. As Pip is confessing about his shame and desires to Joe, Joe talks to Pip in a very wise, worldly tone. He seems to have the greater satisfaction in life, content with what he's been blessed with. Also, Joe tells Pip many times that he loves Mrs. Joe. Right after Mrs. Joe is severely handicapped, Joe expresses this love through his caring at her side at almost all times. He looks past Mrs. Joe's harsh character and really sees her as a beautiful woman. Joe is really a great guy that if in real life, I would want to meet.

My favorite character is Estella. I know she seems bitter and rude, but I know thatshe is only that way because Ms. Havisham made her that way. I know that she teases him and laughs at him but she knows that this does not hurt him deeply. If she thought she was going to truely hurt Pip, she would truely feel sorrow for the boy who kissed her in the courtyard.

Because I do not like being the average person, and enjoy thinking outside the box,I'm going to say my favorite character is the rising and lowering mist. As stated by dictionary.com, a character is a significant visual mark or symbol. Thus, mist is my favorite character because I enjoy danger and surprise in the this novel Great Expectations; Mist is an allusion seen throughout history in many occasions the mist foreshadows a coming danger that the character doesn't know (Dramatic Irony). This is seen when Pip goes to give his convict the file and the food because the mist rises implying that troubles are ahead with him stealing the food and the file. The mist is also seen on Pip's journey to London which foreshadows how the whole entire city of London is going to disappoint Pip. I hope to see mist again soon.

This song by Taio Cruz represents how Estella feels for Pip. She knows that she will break his heart. Regardless of how he feels for her she knows that she will tear him apart, it's clear from the start that she will be the one to break Pip's heart, we can only hope she changes her mind.

So far, my favorite character is Herbert Pocket, or "the pale young boy." He reminds me of the boyish instinct in all of us, especially when he challenged Pip to a faceoff and was beaten fairly and squarely. Now he has turned out to be a popular insider that informs Pip all he must know. This " insider view" of the rich life is all Pip wants, but will never get. He also displays a level of maturity that is absent up to this point in the story. I believe that this maturity was gained when he realized his place and future in life. Now hopefully that maturity will rub off on Pip.

At this point in the story, Joe is my favorite character. Joe was treated often as the punching bag of Mrs. Joe, until her attack, but he still loved her, no matter what she did. Many characters have been introduced into his story, but my favorite character would be Mr. Joe Gargery. He is kind hearted soul that always looks for the good in everyone. Up to this point in the book, by far my favorite character is Joe Gargery, Pip's brother in law. It is not a secret that Mrs. Joe is not the sweetest lady in the world, which is why it fascinates me how Joe is willing to put up with her. If not for any other reason, Joe is able to stay with Mrs. Joe atleast out of love for Pip. I don't believe Joe would ever leave the house, forcing Pip to face Mrs. Joe alone. In addition, I admire Joe because although he is uneducated and illiterate that doesn't put him down. Joe is a skilled and hardworking blacksmith with a big heart.

My favorite charecter is without a doubt Miss Havisham. Shes not neccesarily the kindest, but to me she is the most entertaining. Every time a little more of her story is revealed, the more excited i get. She has a mysterious vibe from her like she is constantly hiding a secret. Her stong mind is a key personality trait that makes her who she is. I mean, wo in the world would have so much hate torward mn they would take it out using their daughter as a prop. There is so much nobody knows about her. For example, why she stopped the clocks. Yes, her heart was broken, but most people would just move on, she stopped time. It should be interesting to discover her personal feelings.

im not sure if this countsas extra credit or not, but i found a few quotes about trust that really describe mss havisham.

“The key is to get to know people and trust them to be who they are. Instead, we trust people to be who we want them to be- and when they're not, we cry.” -She trusted her lover to be the manhe said he was, and is suffering because of it.

“Trust is like a vase.. once it's broken, though you can fix it the vase will never be same again.” -Miss Havisham can't trust men the same was ever again.

“You may be deceived if you trust too much, but you will live in torment if you do not trust enough”- Miss Havisham did trust too much and was left at the alter, but now that she doesnt trust anyone at all, she lives a sad lonely life.

My favorite character from Great Expectations is Mrs. Joe. I love how we all sort of expected her to be a static chracter that just stays mean the whole time, but she actually ends up being quite a dynamic character. After her accident of getting hit upon the head with the iron leg, she completely changes her personality from a horribly mean and vicious monster to a gentle and kind young woman. She also indirectly teaches the reader about how much more you get out of life when you aren't mean and just stop to smell the flowers and appreciate life once in a while.
None of us are absolutely sure why she summons Orlick once she is mute, but I believe that it is so that she can appease her past with Orlick. Right before she got hit, her and Orlick got into a large arguement, and she feels the need to start anew and rid her life of old enemies and grudges.

Without a doubt my favorite character in the story is Joe. Joe may be just a blacksmith, but he is very kind and compassionate. He told the convict after he admitted to stealing the food, that he had a right to it, that they would have let him have it anyway. He never thinks bad of anyone, everyone is a human, living person, just like everyone else. He is a man that loves Pip; and treats him as his best friend, someone Pip needs in his life. Joe is always there, when Pip does something wrong, he admits it to Joe first, because Joe understands him.

I have loved this song for a very long time, and the other day when I was listening to it, it hit me. Pow! This song is obviously written about Estella.
This song is called "Just the Girl" by The Click Five. Pretty much every lyric in this song relates to Pip's feelings about Estella. He knows that she is mean to him, but he simply cannot help himself.

    Some lyrics from the song:
"She's cold and she's cruel. But she knows what she's doing"...Pip completely understands that Estella is mean, and that she knows what she is doing to him.

"Cause she's bittersweet. She knocks me off of my feet. And I can't help myself I don't want anyone else. She's a mystery. She's too much for me.But I keep comin' back for more. She's just the girl I'm lookin' for"...Estella is indeed a mystery to Pip, but he continues to love her. He wants to love Biddy, but he doesn't seem to be attracted to anyone but Estella.

"Knows just what to say.So my whole day is ruined"...Estella does know exactly what to say so that Pip second guesses himself and feels terrible about his social status in life. She always seems to be sickly amused with her words that she says to him, too.

Biddy and Pip's relationship in "Great Expectations" really reminds me of Miss Kinnian and Charlie Gordon's relationship in the short story "Flowers for Algernon". I'm not sure if you have ever read this story before, but at Crews Middle School last year, we read it aloud in language arts class.
Charlie Gordon is a student in Miss Kinnian's class, much like Biddy teaches Pip. Charlie Gordon suddenly undergoes this experiment that is supposed to make him smarter. This situation is much like Pip being given the opportunity to become a gentleman in London. Charlie Gordon gets very smart and begins to get quite a big head. He had used to admire Miss Kinnian, but he starts to feel superior to her and brags to her about his intelligence. This is exactly like Pip's feelings because he used to think Biddy was such a genius and now he brags to her about how he is off to London. He feels superior to and argues with her about how she is envious of him, even though she is very serene with her lifestyle. In "Flowers for Algernon", Charlie Gordon falls for Miss Kinnian, but she feels as if he knows too much for her and has different ideas about life. Pip also starts to fall for Biddy, but she feels the same way as Miss Kinnian does.
As you can see, the two pieces of text practically mirror one another in their characters.

    lol
i like Pip, even though he can be blunt and sort of manipulated

I dislike Pip with a strong passion
especially becuse of his abandonment to Joe

Well, Pip probably wouldn't have abandoned Joe if he wasn't manipulated into seeing Joe as a lower class/ un-gentleman citizen (thanks to Miss Havisham).
    helloo?

sorry my mom came in we'll just edit this part out

    okie pokes!

And it was more Estella than it was miss havisham
    and still
I hate how pip is so immature and easily swayed Estella practically has him by his toes he'll do anything for her and she'll never love him
    I hate Estella

well, yeah. i agree- Estella is pretty influential on Pip (and any man) but think about why Pip is like this. it's because of how he was raised. he was raised kind of weak, in my perspective. always being forced to do things someone else's way, not his own. and not only did mrs. joe raise him, but Joe was part of it too a tad. pip is very innocent in my eyes.

Joe is innocent! All he wants is Pip to be happy and what does Pip do? he rejects him and considers him a commoner he forgets that you can never change what you are! What happens when Estella rejects him? who will he turn to? I'm betting Joe will be willing to forgive him and take him back but Pip won't even consider it i've disliked Pip from the start

i'm not saying i dislike Joe. he's actually one of my other favorable characters. but just because Pip may turn to him if Estella rejects him, doesn't make Pip the bad guy. turning back to Joe means that Pip is strong enough to admit he's wrong. and you've got to remember. Pip is still emotionally a child! he's barely 15 or 16!

    He's like a woman....LOL JUST KIDDING

    Sexist. Dude. Haha.

but what I meant was I don't think he's gonna turn back
    hey I was just kidding
    hahaha

haha i know. (: but wait, who's turning back? wahh?
    haha

I don't think Pip is gonna go crawling back to Joe he's has too much pride and arrogance just like what he said about Estella in the beginning chapters Pride and Insulting
    *Proud

And who's to blame for that. The people who raised him! Ahem, JOE.

Blame him for what? when he didnt think being a commoner was disgraceful I liked him Joe didn't raise him bad he treated him well but Miss Havisham spoiled the heck outta him and who did miss havisham raise? ESTELLA*cough

Well, obviously Pip isn't the one to solely blame. And neither is Joe. I guess the real source of all the troubles is Miss Havisham and Estella. Because they're evil. Haha (:

    lol
I still hate Pip but I agree

I think that Pip is my favorite character. I feel like he has made a pretty good life for himself even though he had a rough past life. His sister and his brother in law adopted him since both of his parents died. Pip seems like the most resonable character because he has such a strong conscience. Even though Pip sometimes makes wrong choices such as not saying a proper farewell, Pip's love and will to help others is portrayed. Pip helps the convict even though he knows that the convict is at fault.

I think my favorite character so far is definitely Miss Havisham. I love how she seems like such a typical old woman character in the beginning, wanting to re-live the past and remember what it was to be a kid, but as you learn more about her she becomes a whole different character. She was betrayed by her half-brother and the man she loved, all for the love of money. Her heart was turned rock-solid towards all men, even if they are innocent little boys with cases of puppy love. Even worse, because of her experience, she ruins Estella's love future by teaching her all men are evil and will leave you in the end. She manipulates Pip's emotions by putting Estella out there and taking her back, all because she would not listen to Matthew Pocket's advice and let go of a grudge. She adds mystique and suspense to the story because you do not know just what she is going to do next. She also is sort of an example of something I think many people go through, being left by people they love, whether it be friends or man/woman you love. They feel betrayed sometimes and therefore (if they are crazy enough)do to others what happened to them.

    http://www.plyrics.com/lyrics/avengedsevenfold/betrayed.html

this is a link to the song by Avenged Sevenfold called Betrayed.
(warning: its kind of a heavy rock song, so just read the lyrics if you don't like the music)

My sister's friend really likes this band. He showed it to me this weekend while I was thinking about this blog and what I was going to do for the 30% extra credit. I really listened to the lyrics and thought that they really described Miss Havisham. The words are about being betrayed, which of course its obvious she was betrayed by the one she loved. However, the music and the way it is sung can almost describe the anger and pain she suffers everyday from this horrible experience.

"Passion in my eyes, I lived it everyday, but how could you go throw it all away?
In my dreams it's me and you, it's there I saw it all come true
As time went by faith in you grew, so one thing's left for me to do

I feel it burn inside, burn in me like the rising sun
Lifted into the sky, took away the only thing I loved
I know after tonight all your power crumbles in my arms
So don't worry, I'll be fine, when my life ends, I'll leave this scar"

Those are some of the lyrics. They show pain from being betrayed, but also show how that pain has turned into anger. Miss Havisham's anger has lead her to become bitter and left her with hate towards all men. It has gone so far that she affects the life of a beautiful and innocent young girl, whose love future no longer exists.

"I feel it burn inside, burn in me like the rising sun
Lifted into the sky, took away the only thing I loved"

I think this part of the song describes Miss Havisham's pain from being betrayed by her half-brother. Her half-brother and her fiance had this entire charade planned out from the beginning. However, since Miss Havisham was in love with her fiance, I do not think she was mad at him. She probably felt as if it was her half-brother's entire fault and somehow convinced or forced her fiance to do what he did. She probably felt as if he "took away the one thing she loved".

All in all, this song describes the pain Miss Havisham feels towards that day she was betrayed. It shows her anger and somewhat gives a way to show her pain through unviolent ways. In the story, Miss Havisham never affects anyone physically, but she digs at their emotions, toys with them, and breaks them down to a point of no return. She is a character who probably believes that being hurt emotionally is far worse than phyiscally, since that kind of pain can last forever.

I would definitely have to say that Joe is my favorite character. Before Mrs. Joe's accident, Joe had to put up with her abusive ways. For example, she would always rhetorically ask why she had to be married to a blacksmith. Through all of this, he stayed with Mrs. Joe purely out of his love for Pip and his need to stay and protect Pip. Eventhough Joe isnt even Pips real gaurdian, he truely cares for Pip. For example, at dinner when he would pour gravy into Pip's plate as if to say sorry. Joe may be a common and uneducated man, but he is one of the few kind and sympathetic characters of the novel.

I guess this is unfortunate in a way, but I would personally have to say that Estella is my favorite character. I just find her to be very dymanic and interesting. She know the pain she is causing in Pip's life, and she knows that what she is doing is cruel. However, that fact that she keeps up with it and keeps this act seems very interesting. She isn't necessarily a bad person, in a sense.
I mean, to me, it seems like she acts how she does because that is what she was taught by Miss Havisham. Maybe she just dosen't know how to truly love someone ?

So far in "Great Expectations," my favorite character is Biddy. Biddy is a great listener, she nice and not insulting, unlike Estella; and she’s there for everybody in their time of need. I think that her characteristics are what make her so likable, and that she really never turns down people when they have problems, or when they want to complain. She listens and just goes along with everything they have to say, and offers her advice. Instead of ignoring Pip and not telling him anything, Biddy states the truth and tries to help Pip as much as possible. As a character she stands out to me, because these types of people are normally the best to be around.

My favorite character is definitely Mr. Jaggers because not only is he a character that everyone has their suspicions on him; but the way he acts. When he was first introduced in the book as a stranger, he called out Mr. Wopsle for stating false information and proclaiming someone guilty without even having the witnesses cross-examined yet. Mr. Jaggers was like an eagle who could see through Mr. Wopsle's lies. Also, the part where he ask Mr. Joe's dog and told him "Bear in mind then, Brag is a good dog, but Holdfast is a better." It was like he knew everything. Mr. Jaggers may seem like a serious man but he can have his humorous moments such as the part where Pip ask for money to buy furniture. As Pip troubles in finding the amount he wants, Mr. Jaggers name him a sum and finally, Pip told him what he wanted. However, at the end when Jaggers ask him what does HE make of four times five. Pip replies saying "I suppose YOU make it twenty pounds" And Mr. Jaggers himself tells him "ever mind what I make of it, I want to know what YOU make of it." This shows that Mr. Jaggers acknowledges Pip as a gentlemen even though he is still young and not tutored yet.

In the movie “The Titanic” the developing relationship between the characters Jack and Rose is similar to Pip and Estella’s. In the very beginning of the movie, after they board the ship, and are sailing on their way, Jack spots Rose from a distance. His friend then tells him that he will never get Rose, since she is out of reach: she’s a first class girl. This reminds me of how Estella will probably never like Pip, and how she squishes his imaginative hope. Throughout the rest of the movie, we find out that Rose and Jack end up together, but we have to wait to see how Pip and Estella’s relationship turns out.

    http://img1.jurko.net/wall/paper/titanic_3.jpg

In this picture its obvious that Jack (the guy) is in a lower class than the fancily dressed girl beside him (the girl). The picture portrays that they are kind of friends, like what we know of Pip and Estella’s friendship now. If the ending from the movie turns out to be similar to the ending in Great Expectations, then it is possible for people in various classes to develop a strong relationship.

I have such a soft spot spot for Joe. He is someone that is truely kind and genuinely good at heart, but I think that his being of lower class inhibits him from really showing his feelings and because of that it is hard for the other characters in the book to see who he really is. It broke my heart when Pip left home because I could just feel Joe's emotions as he watched him disappear and embark on a journey completely foreign to any of them. In Dickens’s words, “He was a mild, good-natured, sweet-tempered, easy-going, foolish, dear fellow – a sort of Hercules in strength, and also in weakness.” He may not be smart, but Joe has been able to teach something to Pip. Joe is very protective of Pip. He even lets his wife, Mrs. Joe, beat him up instead of Pip. He always tries to look at the bright side of things. And whatever opinion you take away of me, shall make no difference in my remembrance of you." It really shows her character. She is calm and understanding, so she doesn't yell back or respond in a mean way. You can tell she cares for Pip; however, she also cares for Joe when she stands up for his manners saying that he could be proud of them. So far, my favorite character has to be Mrs. Havisham. I chose her because while all of the other characters found in this story are well defined and easily seen, Mrs. Havisham seems to be more abstract. This can been seen by her unusual ways. For example, Pip doesn't understand why all the clocks in the house are stopped at the same time, or why there is no daylight in her house, or why she wears a wedding dress that is so old that it has begun to yellow with age, and also PiP dosen't understand why Estella has been adopted by Mrs. Havisham. These unclear portrayals of Mrs. Havisham leave you wondering who she really is. It almost has a magical sense because of the strangeness of her character. This is why Mrs. havisham is my favorite so far, because there is so much not yet understood about her weird characterization.

So this is my second time writing this because the first one got erased but here goes..
So looking at this whole post thing, i've realized that only like one person has said that Pip is their favorite character! I mean, i get that is pride is getting out of hand and that the way he seems to be trying to shrug off his past may not be the kinds of characteristics that usually contribute to the recipe for a good character, but as Mrs. H said before, Pip embodies us all! I don't know anybody that hasn't been ashamed of something. It reminds me of the story of Adam and Eve. After they eat the fruit, their eyes become "opened" and they become embaressed and ashamed. Its human nature. The same thing happens to Pip when he meets Estella. He also shows the tendency of people to want more and more. More money, more class, more Estella. I'm sure we all can relate to this at least a little. I know I sure can! I think that maybe the reason that so many people dislike Pip is because he points out the flaws they themselves may have. However, Pip also has many good characteristics that i believe we all contain. He has courage for going to an unknown place to make a better life for himself. Determination, for holdiing his own against critcism and insult. Lastly, he has the naivety and eagerness that opens doors to new adventures in life. Pip by far is my favorite character because he is so real. He could be any one of us.

    EXTRA CREDIT:
I think Pip is a lot like cinderella. His "fairy godmother", Mrs. Havisham outfits him in a new lifestyle and sends him to london, just like Cinderella is dressed up and sent to the ball. Neither ones diguise really masks their past. When cinderella moves into the castle however, she realizes that royal life isn't what she expected and that she just can not seem to do anything right. People look down on her because of where she came from. When Pip runs into Estella, I think that she will see right through his facade and will see the common boy shes always seen. He will realize being a gentleman isn't all its cracked up to be. Grandeur doesn't get you the girl and marriage to royalty doesn't truely make you royal.

This is not what i wanted to do for extra credit, so if u can, try to make this seem like a comment in your head. I know it sounds wierd, but I think Estella has to be my favorite. She is knid of the key to Pip's extreme (ok, maybe not EXTREME) personality change. She has that trait that can make you crave with lust something that u would never think of wanting. Aparently, this was strong enough to pull that little inocent boy from being content to lusting after that evil temptress - Estella through the calling to become a gentleman.(By the way, look up the word temptress on dictionary.com. It makes a reference to Delilah from the bible) What was going to make this comment so "EXTRA" was this: Lady Gaga has an album called "The Fame Monster" (Which i just happen to have nad has songs from her last album on the delux version) featuring songs like "Beutiful, Dirty, Rich" and "The Fame" and "Monster." But of all the songs on the album, i think "Bad Romance" most acuratly describes Pip and Estella's relationship. With lyrics like: "I want your love and i want your revenge, you and me could write a bad romance", you can easily tie it in with the fact that Pip wants Estella even though she nearly hates him. WAIT! Stop the presses!!! I was listenig to the album while doing this and the song "Love Game" popped up. This my just be the best one yet! OK, this is the chorus: "Let's play a love game,
    Play a love game
Do you want love or you want fame?
    Are you in the game?
    Doing the love game?"
Amazing, RIGHT!!! But wait, there's more.
"The story of us it always starts the same with a boy and a girl and a huh and a game!"

Are you thinking wat im thinking? (i hope not) But im also thinking that lady gaga read this book and made that song JUST 4 ME! Since not much is known about either, I would have to say both convicts are my favorite character. The lack of information on the convicts is what makes them so interesting. Everytime they are mentioned the story it immediately gets more intense and interesting. It is also the only time you see Pip show true fear. My attention is immediately grabbed by the fact that anything can happen, and there could be a huge plot twist coming. The fact that there are so many secrets to these two men makes me want to read ahead in any chapter they are involved in. I'm excited for Pip to find out more about them and hope they become a part of the main plot.

My favorite character so far is Miss Havisham. Just her story and her character traits make her so interesting. She wants revenge on all men who did her wrong, and Estella is her puppet. She spends so much time acting through Estella to take her vengence, and does a very good job making sure she breaks hearts. I like how she seems to just be a strange old little lady, but then you realize how she is angry and heartbroken and has a past.

I just realized a cool connection about Miss Havisham.

Miss Havisham is very wealthy, yet she is still sad and heartbroken. I think she shows that money truly does not make people happy. Once Pip receives the fortune, he thinks that his life will be so much better, but I think it will end up just like Miss Havisham's. He is given so much, but it truly will not make him happy and he will end up figuring out that material things does not bring happiness.

  71. My favourite character is Pip, because he drives me utterly insane, he gets under my skin, sets off my nerves, but I can't hate him, because to hate him would be to hate myself and everyone else who is human, which might as well be a synonym for imperfect. I can't hate him because he is so maddeningly human, and all of his imperfections are what make him such a perfect character. Characters who are riddled with flaws and issues they struggle with extensively are my favourites, because I see myself with in them. We want Pip to be perfect, to do what's right, and he doesn't and so it infuriates us, because we know he is capable of it. But how can we ask of one fictional boy to do what we ourselves don't do? That is what I mean when I say to hate Pip would be to hate myself and all other human beings. Pip has to me such a real, almost touchable feeling that comes with his character, I feel as if I know him though he is nothing more than a figment from the imagination of a man I have never met, who lived in a time I can barely fathom. It is Pip who has shown me Dickens' brilliance, which I struggled greatly to connect with in Tale of Two Cities. Pip is that infuriating characteristic about ourselves that we can't stand, but we must because it's part of what makes us who we are. He also embodies the journey was all go through in our lives, the journey to find out who we are, what our purpose is, and what means the most to us. Pip is also the embodiment of the best things about us, our greatness, that may become hidden under layers made up of our troubles and a thousand little injustices, tarnished by the weathering of life, but is always there.
As such I love Pip, for I love humanity despite all of its flaws, and as human beings we all have a Pip inside of us, always there no matter how deep or who we are.

Miss Havisham is known as the 'fairy godmother.' This actually has a link to the actual fairy tale Cinderella. Cinderella lives in rags and it is not her choice, and Pip is coarse and common which he has no power over. But, once Cinderella encounters her fairy godmother, she is given many wonderful things. The fairy godmother even tells Cinderella that "like dreams, this cannot last forever." When the clock struck 12:00 that night, the spell would be broken. Miss Havisham gives Pip such a wonderful fortune (or so we think). When will 12:00 strike for Pip?

This picture show Puntius Pilate (sp) washing his hands after condemning Jesus to die. Pilate represents Jaggers after every case he does. Jaggers washes his hands symbolizing 'washing his clients off.' When Pilate washed his hands after handing over Jesus to the people of Rome, it symbolized how he wanted nothing do with Him anymore, like how Jaggers wanted nothing to do with his clients after the day was done.

I think our wonderful teacher Mrs. Hedrick will approve because she is so understanding! WAIT! IS MRS. HAVISHAM THE FAIRY GODMOTHER?! okay, got it. So anyways, Mrs. Havisham has had some difficulties in her past. The main one seems to be her fiance leaving her after stealing her money. She seems to be set in the time period of her most destructive moment. What do you think Alex?

heck to the yess! i see you are having difficult difficulties spelling the word "throw". its "sall good". ill let it slide this time! (: I dont know if I am feeling purple. I am almost feeling a green wedding dress. you see, the color purple symbolizes royalty, spirituality, nobility, ceremony, mysterious, wisdom, enlightenment, cruelty, arrogance, and mourning. Contrarily, green represents good luck jealousy and misfortune. Mrs. Havisham is jealous of others. I would want a green dress because I would want good luck. Who wouldnt want to be "clothed in strength and dignity?" (:

"sall good" was on purpose! (: and very good point. I was actually invisioning Mrs. Havisham as being a planning ahead person. I bet she already specified a room in her mansion to her child that never came. This room would most likely be pink, becasue pink symbolizes love, friends, fluffyness, warmth, comfyness, sensuality, femininity, cotton candy, softness, and caressing beauty. My guess is that Mrs. Havisham would want a girl! When analyzing this statement, think about when she was happy with her fiance. She wasn't thinking about using a girl for revenge purposes, but instead for joy, happiness, and all that is listed above. Another difficult difficulty Mrs. Havisham experiences is the will to let go. She tries to let go of the most difficult time in her life and she tries to let go of Pip completely, but can not bear not seeing him at least once a year- on her birthday! (:

good point good point. oh and i know you said "sall good" on purpose.so did i! (: I appreciate how you chose the time to think out the simplicity of the paint job. I agree that the room should be painted pink because Mrs. Havisham was indeed wanting a girl. She would want a girl so that she could break hearts just like Estella is doing. How do you feel about Dickens choice of names. Did you know that the meaning of Estella according to http://www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/0/Estella means star-like; love? Estella is star-like and makes boys love her. Her name is deffiently a turn on! (: do you see the symbolism! (*extra credit*!)

Oh, nice! But I have a hard time getting extra credit in this class... (cough cough). We actually discussed that point in class today. It is very ironc. Dickens seems to do that in his novels a lot! For example, in A Christmas Carol, the famous classic, Scrooge is the main character. Dickens may have portrayed his name to mean something like "screw over". He screws over a lot of people and has to learn the error of his ways. Recently, on a Disney Channel show called The Suite Life on Deck, there is n episode called "A London Carol". London is one of the main characters. She is rich and only cares about herself and her daddy's money. Her talking mirror from childhood take her to the past, present, and future to see how her attitude affected, is affecting, and will affect people. The talking mirror is like the ghosts that take Scrooge on his journey's to see the error of his ways. This is a connection I made and it pertains to how Dickens purposely names characters what he does! (*extra credit*!) (:

    Rebekah: Hey Katherine!
    Katherine: Heyyyy! What’s up?
R: Well, I was just watching the new Gossip Girl and I was thinking about how the characters on the show are similar to the ones in the book.
    K: Really, how?
R: Well, Dan is like Pip, because he was once a poor guy, living in the Bronx, while everyone he associated with lived the high class lifestyle, on the Upper East Side. Then, later in the series, his father remarries, to a multimillionaire!
K: Oh, I gotcha, Dan becomes quite arrogant in his actions after he gets the money, from what I’ve seen, right?
    R: Indeed.
K: So that means that Serena has to be like Estella. Dan was always in love with Serena from the first time he met her, just like Pip always loved Estella. But Serena likes to play games with guys. She can never keep a steady boyfriend- ever, She is always moving from one guy to the next. Sometimes she even leads two guys on at once, leaving them both heartbroken, which in fact, she has done to Dan and Nate over and over again.
R: Yeah, so that kind of makes Nate like Herbert. He used to love Serena, even when Dan and Serena were a couple. Dan and Nate got into quite a few quarrels over her too, all throughout the show. Eventually, Nate matured, just like Herbert, and got over Serena altogether, letting Dan be the one to have her. So after the fact, the actually became quite good friends.
K: Yeah! I never noticed that.
R: Blair also kind of seems to be like Mrs. Joe…
K: Yeah! Because she is so controlling of everyone in her life and she is obsessed with social class and money!
R: You are correct! She always wants to have the most money and she also dislikes Dan very much. Just like Mrs. Joe seems to dislike Pip sometimes. Mrs. Joe seems to be always ungrateful for Pip, and Blair is always annoyed with Dan because she things he is too common to hangout with her “group”.
K: Yeah! That seems about right. Now I see how Gossip Girl is like Great Expectations! Thanks Rebekah, well I gotta gooo. byeee! :)
    R: Bye Kathyyyy! :)

To go along with my previous comment, I would like to show some examples from the book. When Pip is at the dinner table, he feels alone, so Mr. Joe gives him more gravy. My favorite character from "Great Expectations" is Biddy. She cares very much for Pip even when he mistreats her. Also, she has kept her cool and remained very mature when he was acting just the opposite. She is very kind, caring, and loyal.

My favorite character so far is definitely Uncle Pumblechook. Although he does not play a major role in pips journey, i love how he is so self-centered, and looks down on everyone else, just because he owns crops. For example, when Pip was lying about his first visit to Ms. Havishams. Uncle Pumblechook not only bought it completely, he was agreeing and saying that he has seen everything himself. He shows throughout the book that he uses his money to solve problem, leading us to believe that he could not solve them without the money. Even though Pips Uncle-in-law is one of the eviler characters in the book, i like the comic relief provided by his arrogance

My favorite character throughout "Great Expectations" , like Savannah, would have to be Biddy. She cares for Pip and his family dearly, and offered to take care of the forge while Pip's gone. As Pip attempts to get Estella, Biddy is remaining faithful to Pip by taking care of his loved ones. Also, in chapter 27, Biddy sends Pip a letter about what has gone about while he is away. In the conclusion of the note, she concludes, "Your ever obliged, and affectionate servant, Biddy" and that shows the intensity of her loyalty to Pip. Pip really doesn't realize how lucky he truly is at this point.

EXTRA CRDIT: I think this song by Never Shout Never describes Estella and her relationship with Pip. It talks about how she breaks all these boys hearts and feels nothing. It's how she's trained. Though Pip hasn't "moved on" like it talks about here, he does leave to go to London. When it says "Everybody's talking about how you're not the girl, that you say you are with that deceiving little smile..." this can be when Biddy is trying to explain to Pip about Estella and her motives.

Never Shout Never Liar Liar Lyrics:

You got it all down, got it all down, down to a science
breaking hearts, is what you do for fun, little one
but see I wrote it all down, wrote it all down into a song
I'll break you're heart in just three minutes now
    look who won

Yeah I'm moving on but that's the way it goes
when you break my heart, everybody knows
    don't pull that again

For me now, but I'm building up
I can see that I've had enough, of you
    I'm finally through

And all I see in you
is another mistake right over my shoulder
now I see, who you are
All I saw in you, was a girl just lookin for love
and now all I need, is an apology
    but that's too much!

    Everybody's talking about how
you're not the girl, that you say you are
    with that deceiving little smile
and your black hole of denial
I'm, not the least bit surprised
    that your whole wide world
is crashing down, right before my eyes

And all I see in you
is another mistake right over my shoulder
now, I see who you are
All I saw in you, was a girl just lookin for love
and now all I need is an apology

And all I see in you
is another mistake right over my shoulder
now, I see who you are

My favorite character thus far in Great Expectations is Joe. Joe is a kind simple man. He is the character in this story that I think Dickens tries to represent all that is good in a person. He can hold back his feelings for the people he loves. For instance, he never tells Pip he hates or disapproves of his trying to become a gentleman. He also stays with Mrs. Joe despite her being crazy and mean. Joe also helps Pip when he needs it, and encourages Pip for doing the right things. For instance he gives Pip at the dinner table when all the adults are mean to him, and he tells Pip he is a genius when he writes him a letter in the beginning of the book. I believe all of Pip's regret he has had in his childhood will come back and remind him that he left his best friend and the closest thing he has to a father in Joe.

My favorite character is Joe. In the beginning of the book he notices when Pip is uncomfortable around people, like when they are at the dinner table with everyone and they are all talking about "kids" and directing it at him. He keeps giving him gravy over and over again. Joe acts like the nice father and bestfriend to Pip and helps him out. He also is one man who didn't marry a woman for he looks. He looked deep inside of her and found someone he loved. He doesn't show that much affection for Mrs. Joe, but will every now and then like when he stuck up for her with Joes assistant. She noticed and was like this is why i married him.

I think Joe is the best character, due to his concern for Pip. He has the ability to endure a lot of things, like Mrs. Joes treatment of him or the dinner with Pip and his friends being so awkward. And, he is optimistic a lot, like supporting pip in his gentleman training, or trying to help the police with the arresting of the convicts after the christmas dinner.

My favorite character is actually Joe. He's my favorite character because I actually feel bad for him in a way. Like when Ms. Joe is mean to him, and all he wants to do is treat her right; and especially when Pip confesses in the text that he is ashamed of home and the way that Joe acts towards Miss Havisham. I also like the fact that in the beginning Joe seems like a very understandble character that was more like a brother to Pip. Joe seems to be my favorite character because of the pity I feel for him, and the way he acts.

My favorite character so far is Joe. Though Joe is ignorant, he has a very pure, kind heart. I do feel pity for Joe due to the way he acts and for the embarassment that he unknowingly creates for himself. I also feel sorry for him due to the way others think of him when he acts in a "common", ignorant way. In fact, I fell pity for his ignorance not being at his own fault, but due to his childhood with his father. Yet, the warmth of his heart still radiates through his uneducated mind. He is very compassionate and respectful to women-- Joe stands by his wife, and is afraid of doing anything wrong in the way of a woman due to the poor conditions he sees his mother in. Joe cares for Pip like a true friend, always trying to keep him from punishment from Ms. Joe; the life advice that he gives Pip (for example, when Pip lies about the visit with Miss Havisham) derives fully from a desire he has for Pip to have a well-lived, happy life. The sincerity of Joe's heart is what makes him my favorite character in the chapters that we have read so far.

So far, I have to say that Miss Havisham is my favorite character in the book. To me, she is by far the most interesting, the reason being that it is she that brings twists to the book. Pip's life and view of life changes by her decision to have him play at her house. Pip's entire life is influenced, the entire plot is twisted, by her decision to have him sent to London to become a gentleman. It is because of Miss Havisham that this book is so interesting;she is more than just the spice to it.

Her mysterious essence gives the reader a sense of hope, or expectancy. Since Miss Havisham is so mysterious and strange, she brings aboout mist that floats around and about the book; making the reader feel as if there is something more to come, as Miss Havisham still has many secrets to tell, many plans to un-foil. The air of suspense and await in the book is solely due to her weirdness, since by now the readers know that any one thought or decision of hers can flip, twist and wrench the entire story around. It is not just her power that allows her to do this, but the way she is portrayed of being cloudy and mystical. Along the process of reading this book, I like knowing that anything can happen and everything can change in a split second because of Miss Havisham's wish and plan. It gives me, I guess you could say a drive, for reading the book. Her uncanny weirdness is the best part of this book.

This song, Break Your Heart by Taio Cruz, seems like it was written by Estella. Here are part of the lyrics:
    "If you fall for me
    I'm not easy to please
    I might tear you apart
Told you from the start, baby from the start
I'm only gonna break break your, break break your heart."
This song is perfect to compare to Estella and Pip Because Pip begins to like Estella but due to his social class she will just end up breaking his heart. Also "from the start," Estella was mean to Pip yet he still went after her and tried to please her by becoming a gentelman.

My favorite character so far in the book is Pip. This is because he is conceited, but at the same time realizes that he still has much to learn. When he is ridiculed by Estella, Pip accepts it with a strait face even though it hurts deeply. This shows he is stubborn, but can be molded by insults. This in turn causes Pip's relationship with Joe to suffer. Then, when Pip goes to London, he is nice to everyone. Pip is eager to learn how to be a gentleman, even though he came from a homely back ground.

This song, King of Anything by Sara Bareilles, seems like it is written for Pip. After he gets his inheritance, he starts to think of himself as a gentleman. He also thinks he's above everyone who's not a gentleman. If you really listen, this song could seem like Joe was the one writing it to Pip. The chorus show it the most:

"Who cares if you disagree? You are not me. Who made you king of anything? So, you dare tell me who to be? Who died, and made you king of anything?"

When Pip is about to leave for London, he asks Biddy to help Joe with his manners. He seems ashamed of Joe, and wants to change him just because he is a "gentleman" now. It's amazing how one little thing can happen and a person changes like that! (*snap*)

So far, my favorite character is Biddy. She is very caring to all people, and does not expect much from anyone. For instance, she helps Pip even when Pip is so arguable. She always stays loyal. She (at least up to this point) is a very static character, but nevertheless I like her unchanging qualities all the same. She is really truthful, telling what she thinks to Pip clearly and in a matter-of-fact sort of way. I admire her maturity, and she is in many ways the opposite of Estella, whom I do not like at all!

My favorite character is Herbert Pocket. Herbert is the pale young gentleman that brawled with Pip at the Satis House. Herbert lost, and Pip got to kiss Estella. Unlike most people, Herbert doesn’t seem to hold a grudge. “‘Well’ said the pale young gentleman, reaching out his hand good-humouredly, ‘it’s all over now, I hope, and it will be magnanimous in you if you’ll forgive me for having knocked you about so.’” Herbert also shows that he wants to stand on his own two feet and that he does not want to really on his father for money. This is the exact opposite of Pip, who wants everything handed to him on a silver platter. Also unlike Pip, Herbert sees Estella for the slimy witch that she is. He knows that she is not worth the trouble and that she plays around with men and breaks their hearts. He had the chance to marry her and rejected her while Pip would give the world for that chance. I agree with him and how he lives his life.

My favorite character i would have to say is Estella. to me she represents a mystery that has yet to be unraveled. A bunch of puzzle pieces waiting to be put together. I think Pip might be the one who does just that later on in the story. She might be my only reason for reading the book. just like almost everybody i'm perplexed at how foul she is with Pip.

    “Two Worlds” by Demi Lovato
Here is a fragment of the lyrics:

You had your dreams, I had mine.
You had your fears, I was fine.
Show me what I couldn't find,

    When two different worlds collide.

    She was scared,
    unprepared
    Lost in the dark.
    Falling apart,
    I can't survive.
    With you by my side,
We're gonna be alright. (we're gonna be alright)
This is what happens when two worlds collide.

The song can be related to how strong the bond is between Pip and Joe Gargery. Throughout Pip’s life, Joe has been doing whatever he can to help Pip. Joe is even willing to stay out of Pip’s way if that helps him. Joe is upset that Pip leaves to London, but Joe lets him go because it will make Pip happy and it may help realize Pip’s dream of becoming a gentleman.

My favorite character is Biddy. So far Biddy has been static, but there is nothing wrong with being consistently kind and caring. She has been a major part of Pip's current success, whether it being that she has helped educate him or that she has helped take care of his family while he is away. She's also been a source of encouragement and wisdom. Pip may not realize it yet, but he may not be where he is without this very important girl.

My favorite character in this book so far has to be Joe. Joe is such a kind person with a sweet heart. He loves Pip like a son and loves to have him as his apprentince. I also like Joe because he loves his wife, even though she can get routy sometimes. I feel like he is the only one that truly understands her. Finally, I like how Joe supports Pip when he leaves for London. Joe is an overall great character

I have to say Biddy is my favorite character so far because you can't see a dark side to her. She cares so much for Pip and his family that she even helps around the forge once Pip left for London and she continues to take care of Mrs.Joe. Biddy cares for Pip and wants him as more than a friend but was still kind towards him even though he doesn't like her back and is still supported with the fact that she also tutored him.

My favorite character so far is Mr. Jaggers. He is not my favorite character because of his demeanor, but because I feel that there is a lot more to him than what we have been exposed to. Mr. Jaggers reminds me of Mr. Lorry from a Tale of Two Cities. In the beginning, Mr. Lorry appeared to be a strict man of business, like Mr. Jaggers is. Mr. Lorry had to keep reminding himself that the situation that he was involved in was, “just a matter of business.” However, as the story progressed, Mr. Lorry began to show affection to his client and to the people around him. I think that a similar change might occur in Mr. Jaggers. We have gotten a glimpse of a different side of Mr. Jaggers, because he has shown a liking of Drummle. Still, I believe that there is far more to Mr. Jaggers then his work, and I am intrigued to read more to find a change in him.

My favorite character is probably mrs havisham because she was just so odd, she added a lot of humor to the book. I thought she was odd, because of the strange things she did. like having her wedding cake from the wedding that didnt even happen. or how she made pip eat outside. i just thought that she made the book funnier.

My favorite character in the book is Joe. Joe embodies the saying that you don't have to be a smart man to be a wise man. Joe shows this wisdom when Pip reveals to him his desires for the future, Joe talks to him in a very wise manner. Joe also seems to always be looking on the bright side of things and be very optimistic about life. He seems to be satisfied with his life, knowing that there is more out there but feeling content and blessed to be where he is. Joe is also that person that you can always rely on. this is shown through his constant love and care of Pip and Mrs. Joe. Even after Mrs. Joe is handicapped, Joe constantly stays by her side and cares for her. He looks past her outward character and sees her as a beautiful woman. another thing that I like about Joe is how he is a hard worker which sets a great example for Pip. Joe is truly a great guy that everyone should strive to be like.

My favorite character so far would have to be Herbert. Even though he isn't mentioned alot yet within the book, I think he's the only character that I have nothing to dislike about. He's hard working, polite, humble, kind, and generous. He wants to build a future on his own by doing what he loves, which is another hidden lesson that Dickens could be trying to send, in that doing what you love and following your passion will make you happy and prosperous in life. He also trys to stay from the evils and temptations around him by ignoring them and living on his own. He acts as a role model for Pip and a template for the ways in which we should all try to live our lives. I also want to see how he progrosses within the story and if he changes at all.

my favorite character so far would be ms.havisham. ms.havisham is known to be manipulative, revengful, angry, and in a way lonley. but she is my favorite because who in this world has never been like this before: manipulative, revengful, angry, and in a way lonley. she tells Estella tp break pip'sheart. but when have you told a friend to not do something to benefit you or make you feel better. so i like ms.havisham because to me she always reminds me of those things that happen in my life that will always and forever change you because she wasnt like that before. she was happy and in love until her husband left her and from that she became who she is in the story.

My favorite character in Great Expectations, is Wemmick. His character symbolizes the people in today's society. It shows how we can pretend to be one person at school or work and be a completely different person at home, Whether it be fully, of to a certain extent. For example, Wemmick is sarcastic, impatient and rude at work, whereas at home, he is quite the opposite: loving, cheerful, and patient. Today a man can be "happy" at work and in public places, but depressed. Or a man could pretend to have his life together, when he really doesn't. Some examples in pop culture, include: Tiger Woods, Miley Cyrus, Michael Jackson, Brittney Spears, and so on. The public eye sees these celebrities as living one life, then the media exposes them and we are reminded that they are just like everyone else.

My favorite character in Great Expectations is Joe. He has a good personality that is both kind and empathetic. He is one of the few adults in the story that is actually nice to Pip and shares a sort of brotherly connection with him that is only strengthened by the strict ways of Mrs. Joe. He is child-like and mature at the same time, which i think is an admirable quality. Joe shows that he is also a humane and level-headed man when the convict tells him that he stole food from him. Instead of lashing out or wanting to lynch the man, he responds that he would rather him steal the food than to die cold and hungry out on the marshes. Joe is my favorite character because I have a lot of respect for him.

While I was writing about Joe i was reminded of the song "Simple Man" by Lynard Skynard. (http://www.4shared.com/audio/HZmvTI_P/lynard_skynard_-_simple_man.htm)

Joe reminds me of this song because he is content with what he has and doesn't seem to want anything but his family, friends, and forge. He is a completely laid-back kind of guy with a positive perspective of the world. Also, the song seems like the kind of advice that Joe would give to Pip.

My favorite character in this book is Mr. Jaggers. I actually like him because of his mentality; he doesn't accept losing. He even has heads of two dead clients in his office to remind him to never lose a case in court again. I like that about him. I honestly think the competitive drive to win is what makes legends (like my role model Tom Brady). I think Mr.Jaggers skill in court may prove valuable in later chapters. In conclusion, Mr. Jaggers is my favorite character in Great Expectations so far.

This is a picture titled "Guilt". This reminds of Pip and his guilt about stealing for his convict and how it has taken over his life. It has even shown up in his adulthood. Guilt is a powerful thing and can follow you for the rest of your life.

My favorite character in the book would have to be Joe. He is very caring and a good friend who protects Pip. It is very dissapointing to see how after all of thos years together, Pip is ashamed to think of Joe as a friend when he visits London. For the first many chapters, Joe (along with Biddy) is Pip's only friend who tries his best to help Pip unlike Mrs. Joe and the others. With out Joe in his childhood, Pip's life would be completely different.

My favorite character is defintetly Pip! And no, not because of his adorable name, though that did help the cause. My heart just goes out to Pip as I watch him go through his struggles, partially because I've felt the pain he's feeling at times in my life as well. He is surrounded by people who continue to bring him down, and make him feel like nothing. The only person he has is Joe. He is faithful to Joe through thick and thin, thought that faithfulness isn't shown by others in his life. Pip is a dreamer, to say the least. He dreams of many things, to be loved by Estella, to be a gentleman, and to be free of his status in society. I just hope that Pip will achieve his goals.

Extra Credit: I really would like to give Pip a huge hug and sing this song to him, because it describes where he is right now so well!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bx8u9oDw4HA

We were born to embrace not accept it
We were given nothing more until we kept it
As the color of our boots keep fading
Live a life that we hate without saying

PIp feels like he can't choose any other life than what lies before him, even though he knows that being a blacksmith isn't what he wants. Times passes and passes, and Pip still is stuck in a life he isnt happy with, though he doesn't feel like he cant tell Joe or his sister that he feels this way.

Ms. Havisham is without a doubt my favorite character. She is amusing and figuring out her reasoning behind her lifestyle is always entertaining. I love how Ms. Havisham always wears her white gown and her clocks are all stopped at 8:40. This adds mystery to her character. The way she raises Estella also seems to fascinate me. Everyone loves the sense of revenge and i feel that revenge makes Ms. Havisham who she really is.

I love the character of the convict. Not so much himself but how he treats Pip and reacts. Pip is a little boy just wandering around and runs into an escaping convict, how weird would that be? The convict threatens him leaving him scared so why does Pip still bring him the file and bread? The convict shows how some people in life can be, a thing Pip hasn`t experienced yet in his years.

My favorite character in "Great Expectations" is Joe. He is really nice, and very kind to Pip. Even though Mr. Joe goes through a lot of negative things he always happens to find the postive things. Joe throughout the story is misunderstood, for example Pip thought that he would get in trouble for giving food to the convicts. However when Joe found out he was completely cool with it. this shows how much of a kind man he is. He is even willing enough to give food to a convict that could kill the m in the blink of an eye. Instead he finds the postive side and is joyful that he was able to provide for a person in need.
